Expectations and Homework
Expectations for class are as follows: Be prompt and prepared – come to class on time and turn in all work on the date it is due. Be Respectful – to yourself, other students, and your teacher. Be Involved – participation is required in every class. Both attendance and participation are vital parts of this course. Students are expected to ask questions, participate actively in discussions, and generate/share ideas. Grading is based on participation, weekly homework, quarterly tests and an end of year project.

About the Course
Informal Logic - Grades 7-12

Logic is the study of the principles of correct reasoning.  The study of logic trains and sharpens reason. Informal logic is the study of errors in logic. 

In this course, students will learn how to spot bad reasoning and learn to avoid fallacies in their own arguments.  My hope is that the skills students  learn in this class, and continue to learn throughout life, will help them to be warriors for truth. 

Discussion will be facilitated about the informal logic fallacies using The Fallacy Detective.  We will add relevance by discussing practical applications through an analysis of current social, commercial, and political issues as well as other fun topics. 

We will also read Animal Farm in the second semester when we review Propoganda.

Hi. My name is Sarah Kochert. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Masters of Science in Exercise Physiology. I have 2 daughters and have been homeschooling since the oldest was born. I have been teaching with Cornerstone for 12 years, serving as the elementary program director and a board member for five of those years. I have taught a range of subjects in classes from K-12 as an instructor with Cornerstone. In my very little spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, hiking and being active.
