Some information is not shown until you have an approved application, and logged in with an approved account.
Course Schedule
Class Follows K-6 Annual Schedule
Dates: 2024-08-27 to 2025-04-08
Cost
Tuition: $175 / Annual
Supplies: $0
Expectations and Homework
Science class may have optional take-home lessons and/or activities. For each book we cover (4), I will be asking students to do a simple project at home to bring in for "show and tell", examples: making a plant cell out of food or making a model of an atom out of clay to bring in to show the class. No regular homework will be assigned and no grades will be given. If a student has purchased the science books, it would be helpful to read the up-coming lesson prior to class. This is also optional, as buying the books is not required. Students will be asked to do an end-of-the-year project and or presentation for Presentation Day, which is usually the first week of April. More information will be sent out on Presentation Day as it gets closer! Lastly, I like to organize a couple field trips per year for our science class. These are held on a day when Cornerstone is not meeting and are completely optional.
Class Supplies Needed
Students should bring a pencil and folder to class.

Science:

The curriculum we will be using is, Answers in Genesis. We'll be using 4 books from the God's Design series. The books will be taught in this order.  (The 3/4 Science class tries to stay on the same book schedule as the 5/6 Science class.)

1) God's Design for Heaven & Earth- Our Weather & Water

2) God's Design for Chemistry & Ecology- Properties of Atoms & Molecules

3) God's Design for the Physical World- Heat & Energy

4) God's Design for Life- The World of Plants

Books are not required, however it may be useful to have students read over the material and be familiar with it prior to class and/or discuss with parents after class.

If you want to purchase books, you can do so, here:

https://answersingenesis.org/store/product/gods-design-complete-set/

The science portion of this class is 60 mins and will include discussing one unit of material from our book during the first part of class. One unit covers many lessons, so we will be covering the highlights of each unit. The goal of 3/4 science is to give an introduction to many science topics, not to go too in-depth on any one topic in particular, as all of these topics will be revisited more in-depth in the years to come. These lessons are a great "jumping off" point and gives parents the oppurtunity to go more in-depth at home, if they wish. If you choose to buy the books, there are multiple ways to go deeper into each topic that is covered. The second part of science class may include any of the following: hands-on activities, experiments, demonstrations, games, songs, "show and tell", etc.

History:

The history portion of this class is 30 minutes long and will be taught by Jessica Mittwede. We will be covering the Age of enlightenment, Age of Industry, and Age of information and Globalization for history this year! This will include memory work, hands-on activities, the use of maps, and discussion over history events included in the cards.

The students will record their information in a history journal that the students will bring to class each week.

The curriculum we will be using is the Classical Conversations History Cards: Modern World and New World. I also pull from additional reading books and maps listed below. These items are optional.

About Maggie
Maggie

I am very excited to teach 3rd & 4th grade science again this year! I have always LOVED science and am looking forward to teaching your kids this year!
My prayer is that my students will "see God in the science". If I strive to do anything well this school year, it is that!
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene at the University of Louisville in 2007. I am a dental hygienist by trade, but a homeschool mom at heart! A few of my interests include: gardening, canning, baking, hiking, reading, raising chickens, all things 4-H and being involved with our church! I look forward to meeting you and your kids this year and sharing my love of science with them!

About Jessica
Jessica

I graduated from Belhaven University in 2009 with a degree in elementary education. I then continued my education to become certified with the American Montessori Society. I taught in an elementary Montessori classroom in the Jackson Public School District in Mississippi for four years. I left to be a stay at home mom to my oldest daughter in 2013. Montessori opened my eyes to the beauty of children learning at their own pace. I knew I would love to homeschool, and I have enjoyed the privilege of being able to do so since they started school. I now have four children that attend Cornerstone, and being a part of the community here has been a blessing in our homeschool journey.
I currently teach history for third and fourth grade. I enjoy discussing and learning about different pedagogies. I am particularly inspired by Charlotte Mason, Classical Education, and Montessori.
You can find me in the garden, running, hiking, baking and trying new skills or crafts that catch my eye.
