About the Course
5th–6th Grade Language Arts is a course designed to strengthen students’ reading, writing, and communication skills through engaging activities and meaningful discussion. The course emphasizes skill-based writing instruction through IEW, building a solid foundation in writing mechanics and punctuation, Latin and Greek word roots, and clear, confident public speaking.
What We’ll Cover:
- Public Speaking Practice: Students will have the opportunity to build their confidence by reciting a Bible verse, sharing a poem, or presenting their own writing in front of the class on a bi-weekly basis.
- Mechanics of Writing: We will use Analytical Grammar to emphasize punctuation, capitalization, and usage skills in student work. Basic grammar instruction is included in the other year of the 5th/6th grade two-year rotation.
- Writing Foundations: Students will use the IEW Investigations in Writing curriculum to practice structured writing techniques such as outlining, summarizing, inventive compositions related to intriguing topics, and formal essays across a variety of subjects while building clarity, organization, and effective expression in their writing.
- Vocabulary: We will use Word Roots Level 1 from The Critical Thinking Company to explore Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and root words, helping students improve vocabulary, spelling, and the ability to decode new words.
- Reading/Literature: While this will not be a formal part of class instruction, I will provide suggestions for novels and picture books for independent reading. I may use these books to draw attention to interesting word usage, language patterns, or writing techniques during class discussions, helping students notice and explore elements of language that can inspire their own writing.
This class is designed to help students grow as confident communicators, critical thinkers, and creative writers, all while having fun with language and literature!
Required books:
1. Investigations in Writing, IEW
3. Analytical Grammar: Mechanics
I have linked writing and grammar to student/teacher bundles and encourage the purchase of teacher manuals. Purchasing the teacher guide alongside the student workbook helps you confidently mentor at home, since they include clear explanations, examples, and teaching notes that support our once-a-week classroom instruction. Together, they ensure consistency between class and home while giving you the tools to guide grammar and writing practice effectively throughout the week.
** I always suggest contacting Karen at Karen's Kurriculum Korner in Prospect, KY to see if she has any used copies of these books available, which will save you some money.
A minimum of 6 students must be registered for the course to proceed as scheduled.
