Expectations and Homework
Science class may have optional take-home lessons and/or activities. For each book we cover (4), I may ask students to do a simple project at home to bring in for "show and tell", examples: making a plant cell out of food or making a model of an atom out of clay to bring in to show the class. No regular homework will be assigned and no grades will be given. If a student has purchased the science books, it would be helpful to read the up-coming lesson prior to class. This is also optional, as buying the books is not required. Students may be asked to do an end-of-the-year project and/or presentation for Presentation Day, which is usually the first week of April. More information will be sent out on Presentation Day as it gets closer!
Prerequisites
None

About the Course
 3-4 Science & History

The Science portion of this class will be taught by Amber Shipe. $125 of the $175 cost of the class will be paid to her. Please make a deposit payment ONLY to Amber Shipe.

The History portion of this class will be taught by Jessica Mittwede. $50 of the $175 cost of the class will be paid to her on the first day of class.

To summarize the payment process for this class:

Payment of $50.00 deposit to only Amber Shipe when deposits are due. An additional $75.00 will be paid to her by the first day of class, for a total of $125.

Payment of $50.00 due to Jessica Mittwede on the first day of class.

Please make payments accordingly.

Science:

The curriculum we will be using is, Answers in Genesis. We'll be using 4 books from the God's Design series. The books will be taught in this order.  (The 3/4 Science class tries to stay on the same book schedule as the 5/6 Science class.)

Our Planet Earth

Properties of Matter

Machines & Motion

The World of Animals

Books are not required, however it may be useful to have students read over the material and be familiar with it prior to class and/or discuss with parents after class.

If you want to purchase books, you can do so, here:

https://answersingenesis.org/store/product/gods-design-complete-set/

The science portion of this class is 60 mins and will include discussing one unit of material from our book during the first part of class. One unit covers many lessons, so we will be covering the highlights of each unit. The goal of 3/4 science is to give an introduction to many science topics, not to go too in-depth on any one topic in particular, as all of these topics will be revisited more in-depth in the years to come. These lessons are a great "jumping off" point and gives parents the oppurtunity to go more in-depth at home, if they wish. If you choose to buy the books, there are multiple ways to go deeper into each topic that is covered. Part of science class may include any of the following: hands-on activities, experiments, demonstrations, games, songs, "show and tell", etc.

*Payment can be made by check or venmo - @ambershipe (last 4 digits of phone number 7671)

History:

The history portion of this class is 30 minutes long and will be taught by Jessica Mittwede. We will be covering the Middle Ages this year by following the Story of the World Curriculum, book 2, The Middle Ages! This will include memory work, hands-on activities, the use of maps, games and discussion over history events.

The curriculum we will be using is the Story of the World, Volume 2: Middle Ages. While optional, students will benefit from reading the chapters at home.

I will have green folders that will contain student work. I will provide this folder.

There won't be any required homework. I will send home optional history homework periodically.

Please make all payments by check or Venmo (@Ryan-Mittwede code: 3927). Please include your students name. Thank you. Please also know this is a separate payment than science. History does not receive a deposit. You can pay once the year starts. Thank you.

About Amber
Amber

Hi! I am a pastor's wife and homeschool mom to four kiddos; I have homeschooled since the beginning! I got my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. Before having kids, I was a public school teacher and taught third grade for several years. I enjoy spending time with my family, playing games, reading, playing pickleball, and studying God's Word! Twice a month I lead my daughter's AHG unit, the Tenderhearts. I am excited to teach Science at Cornerstone!

About Jessica
Jessica

Jessica graduated from Belhaven University in 2009 with a degree in elementary education. She then continued her education to become certified with the American Montessori Society. She taught in an elementary Montessori classroom for the Jackson Public School District in Mississippi for four years. Jessica left to be a stay at home mom when her oldest daughter was born in 2013. Montessori opened Jessica's eyes to the beauty of children learning at their own pace. She knew she would love to homeschool has enjoyed the privilege of being able to do so. She now has four children- two that attend Cornerstone and two that attend Christian Academy of Indiana. Being a part of the community here has been a blessing in our homeschool journey.
Jessica currently teaches history for third and fourth grade.
