About the Course
Psalms 150:3-6 - Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Music education inspires creativity, and teaches children to listen well, as well as work as a team. It provides outlets for expressing our deepest emotions. Studies show that music education enhances cognitive skills, language development, memory, and concentration. It also fosters emotional intelligence, self-expression, creativity, imagination, coordination, motor skills, academic performance, confidence, and social skills. Additionally, it helps reduce stress and anxiety, introduces cultural awareness, and creates lifelong enjoyment and abilities.
The 4th-6th general music class will teach children the language of music through many games and activities.
In the class, students will:
Identify, clap, and play advanced rhythms
Sing solfege patterns, practice harmonies and rounds
Sing multicultural folk songs, including singing games and folk dances
Learn and use music vocabulary
Listen to well-known pieces of music and identify most orchestral instruments by sight and sound
Identify the orchestral families and instruments that belong to each family
Study musical periods and composers
Practice playing rhythm instruments including bucket drumming

About Dawn
Hello! I'm Dawn Kimberlin Combs and I'm so happy to be at Cornerstone!
I have two wonderful grown children and am blessed with six beautiful grandchildren. My love for children has led me to teach preschool through elementary in both school and church settings.
After completing classes at Oral Roberts University, I earned a Child Development Associate (CDA) through the National Council of Early Childhood Education in 2001. My experience includes kindergarten instruction through the Title 1 All-Day Program at Scottsburg and Lexington Elementary Schools, as well as teaching Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Physical Education, Elementary Math and Reading tutoring at Restoration Christian School. I also taught Music at Grace Christian Academy.
I have a deep passion for music and worship. I lead worship at New Bethel Church in Lexington, IN, where I've been a lifelong member. I've enjoyed teaching elementary Sunday School, leading Kids Church and Wednesday Kids Club, organizing children's Christmas and VBS music programs, and directing children and adult choirs.
In my free time, I enjoy playing piano, singing, hiking, traveling, cooking, baking, flower gardening, volunteering, and spending time with my family and friends. I have a heart for Jesus and music, and love teaching children about both.
