About the Course
Course Overview
This course integrates both science and history, with topics rotating on a three-year schedule. The combined 5th/6th grade class meets for 90 minutes.
Science (60 minutes)
The science portion focuses on interactive discussion, hands-on experiments and activities, demonstrations, and may also include memory work, songs, games, and worksheets. Typically, we will cover one unit per class, consisting of several lessons.
2026–2027 Science Curriculum
Answers in Genesis – God’s Design Series (4 books)
- Our Planet Earth
- Properties of Matter
- Machines & Motion
- The World of Animals
Purchasing these books is optional but highly recommended. Families with students who will remain in elementary science for 3–4 years may consider purchasing the full God’s Design Science MasterBooks 4-book set, as all 12 books (three within each MasterBook) will be taught over a three-year cycle. Each year, we select four books from across the sets to provide a broad range of science topics.
Books can be purchased at the main website:
https://answersingenesis.org/store/product/gods-design-set-fearfully-wonderfully-made/
Scroll down to the sets and select “Buy Individually.”
Please note:
- Teacher’s guides are not required.
- Be sure to purchase the Grades 3–8 editions (not the “For Beginners” K–2 versions).
Students benefit greatly from reading the assigned unit before class. Pre-reading helps them follow discussions more easily, participate in answering questions, and retain information for a longer period of time.
History (30 minutes)
The history portion of the class will focus on the Middle Ages, using The Story of the World, Volume 2: The Middle Ages. Lessons will include memory work, hands-on activities, map work, games, and discussions of historical events.
While purchasing the book is optional, students will benefit from reading the assigned chapters at home. No required homework will be assigned, though optional assignments may occasionally be sent home.
Payments
Please submit payments by check or Venmo (@John-Jarboe-10) and include your student’s name with the payment.

About JoAnna
I am excited to teach 5/6th Grade Science and History! Students will enjoy the structure of this course, and the skills they develop will provide a strong foundation for future coursework.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Indiana University Southeast in 2002. After graduation, I worked at IU Southeast for eight years as an Admissions Counselor and Coordinator of High School Recruitment, followed by three years in Academic Affairs as a Resource Specialist. When my oldest daughter approached kindergarten, my husband and I decided that I would step away from full-time work so we could begin our homeschooling journey. We have truly enjoyed homeschooling and are deeply grateful for the many blessings it has brought to our family.
