About the Course
Speech class for middle school students will cover the basic format for writing a speech, while learning the different types of speeches including platform speeches, limited prep speeches, and interpretive speeches. Students will have an opportunity to write and give speeches in each category. The goal is to make speaking fun, not intimidating, to teach various types of speeches, to give students a chance to try different styles, and gain confidence.
The class will also teach Order in the Court which covers learning the judicial system through participation! After learning about each person's role in the courtroom, students will have a mock trial based on a children's story. They will write opening and closing statements, have cross examinations, and other proceedings to learn about court structure in a fun way!
Students will also be introduced to the structure of debating and will debate fun topics in a casual way.
Tuition can be paid by check or Venmo. A minimum of five students is required to hold this class.
Books are to be decided.

About Diane
I have taught at Cornerstone since 2013. Before that I taught my own children (five of them) and also taught at IUS (for 15 years). I served as a coach for Truth Advocates Speech and Debate Club for nine years teaching students the skills of speaking and debating for competition. In that role I also worked with teams to plan and run tournaments. I attended Taylor University and earned a BA in communications and business.
In my free time I enjoy participating in and leading Bible studies, writing, exploring, traveling, hiking, kayaking, and spending time with friends and family.
